Treatment and services for parents and families
The Anni Bergman Parent-Infant Program (ABPIP) offers a variety of services including consultations, referrals, and dyadic psychotherapy to parents and infants up to the age of three. Fees are determined on a sliding scale basis and range from pro-bono to full fee.
Services are provided by clinicians who have advanced mental-health degrees in psychology or social work and training in psychoanalysis, as well as having completed ABPIP’s Three-Year Training in Parent-Infant Studies.
Dyadic psychotherapy supports existing positive care-giving interactions and communication between parents and baby, and helps parents understand how their own histories might affect their parenting. This helps guide a baby’s development and the parent-child relationship in the direction of growth and mutual emotional fulfillment, the building blocks for the infant’s emotional, relational and intellectual capacities.
Possible reasons for consultation include:
- Difficulties with pregnancy, labor and delivery affecting the parent’s connection to their baby.
- Parent’s or baby’s medical illness
- Postpartum emotional struggles such as: depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, suicidal ideation, difficulties with eating or sleeping in parents and/or baby, difficulties with siblings.
- Problems in relationship with partner and/or extended family affecting the dyad.
- Environmental stressors impacting the family
